October Commanders Report

Legionnaires, Families, Friends

It’s hard to believe we’re already in October. I’ve always found something so special about the fall months. While they represent change and growth, they also signal time with family. I look forward to sharing the coming months with the Post and am hopeful we have created some truly special events for everyone to look forward to.

Beginning on Veterans Day, we will be hosting a 22-mile hike to raise awareness for veteran suicide rates. All funding raised from this hike goes into our Veterans Fund, which allows us to support veteran programming throughout the year. IF you are interested in participating in this (there’s a 22k and 2k option as well), you can register at www.marchforthe22.us. We will also be a part of the Veterans Day Luncheon and will be dedicating a brick at Carolina East’s new veterans’ park. For information on both events, you can contact our Finance Officer, Mark Sandvigen.

We are in the initial planning stages of our Christmas Party. As a Post, we will be welcoming 10 active-duty families to attend our Christmas Party, free of charge, in an effort to show the Marines aboard MCAS Cherry Point how much we appreciate them. We will also be hosting a toy drive for Toys for Tots. You can bring new toys to the Christmas Party, and we will be sure to have a Marine pick them up. Finally, at the Christmas Party, I will be announcing the winner of the coin challenge. I am not looking forward to counting those coins, but I am thankful for everyone’s participation!

If you have an event you are interested in seeing our Post host, I encourage you to share your desires with the executive committee. We are here to serve you and to make this the most prosperous post in the state.

Finally, we have one very exciting announcement – we have hired a team of prior service Marines to revamp our website, with the goal of attracting more visitors and members. Check it out at www.newbernpost539.org. If you have a passion project, for instance if you happen to love military history, and you would be interested in writing a blog about it each month, let us know, and we will be sure to provide you the means to start your blog!

Semper Fidelis,

Liz
